In a report from The Strait Times, Kheng Hai was sued by his own father, Chin Kim Yon, because of the conflict regarding the condominium at Hillview Avenue, which is said to be worth about SG$1.2 million. The father, who is a newspaper vendor, said that he paid SG$700,000 for the Hillview Avenue unit in 2000. However, he registered the said unit on his children, Kheng Hai and his daughter, Yun Qin, when he had his second chance in marriage in 1963. The latter died in 2014.
After the death of Yun Qin, Chim Kim Yon transferred the share of his daughter to his name. He then sued his son for getting the other half. Chim Kim Yon said that even if he named the unit after his children, it was never his intention to give it to them. Instead, he considered it as merely handling the said condominium “on trust” for him.
During the first trial day, Mr. Chin said that the legal action against his son is because of his contemptuous manner. In 2013, Kheng Hai was said to hit his father with a bottle when he visited Mr. Chin in Johor Bahru. The incident happened merely because of his anger. Mr. Chin is hoping that he could make his ownership lawful as soon as possible in order to prepare how the property should be managed in case he dies.
Aside from Kheng Hai and his late daughter Yun Qin, Mr. Chin also has three children with his first wife. He was married to their mother in 1958. According to Chin’s lawyer, he bought the unit when his two children said they can no longer pay for the rent at this Hillview Avenue unit in Bukit Batok. This unit is located along with other luxury homes including Hills Two One. Chin also said that he clearly stated that this unit will not belong to them. Unfortunately, they mortgaged the said condominium for SG$400,000 and the proceeds weren’t used to get another property like what they agreed on.
